Emergency Shutdown Systems
Every Powell Valve Closure System, whether intended for 90 ton tank cars or 150
pound cylinders of hazardous chemicals, has undergone a complete design and testing
procedure before the first system is ever sold. By doing this, we can ensure that
every future system will share the same quality, reliability and durability you
would expect to find in a Powell Valve Closure System.
The procedure starts with a need. Our customers have indicated the need for various
emergency shutdown systems aimed at the emergency closure of valves on containers
of numerous different hazardous chemicals.
Once we understand the need, we gather a team of experienced professionals to determine
the best path to fill the needs of our customers. During this period, we research
every aspect of the particular chemical, container and valve combination in question.
Next, a design is produced in Powell’s CAD Department using the latest state-of-the-art
drafting software. By utilizing the latest analysis features, we can identify the
appropriate materials, dimensions and working clearances before the first prototype
is built.
Still, no drawing can answer all the design and development questions that must
be addressed before any new emergency valve closure system is put on the market.
So, a prototype system is then fabricated. This system is then evaluated as described
in following articles:
Shutdown Systems for Various Container Sizes
Powell is the only manufacturer to offer both pneumatic or electric systems for
both small (150 lb cylinders, ton containers, and tube trailers) to large container
sizes (20 Ton Bullet Tanks to 90 Ton Railcars).
Powell offers several brackets designed to adapt to a variety of valve types, making
the systems compatible with an extensive list of hazardous gasses. Powell can design,
engineer and test prototype brackets upon request.
